While we’re posting early twentieth century stuff, here is an original patent Stillson by Walworth I have acquired. ca. 1910s, or earlier. Should go well with the 20s/30s Ford wrench and the King Dicks.

Years ago I was helping a friend disassemble a shock assembly with a large threaded cap that held the damper insert in place. The “official” instructions said to use a Stillson wrench. We both turned to each other and asked “What the hell is a Stillson wrench?”.

We said screw it, we’ll use a big pipe wrench instead. Only much later after some Google work did I figure out we had in fact effectively used a “Stillson wrench” after all.  (No, it wasn’t a genuine Stillson brand wrench.)

We’ve got two King Dick adjustable wrenches like this in the toolbox:

We’ve also got 1 or 2 Model A/Model T adjustable wrenches like this:

I was told early on that a monkey wrench was not the same thing as a pipe wrench, but for a while I erroneously thought straight-jaw right-angle wrenches were Stillsons. Nope. Monkey wrench.

The only thing making a Stillson different than a modern Ridge patent (Ridgid) style one is that the Stillson has a pivoting sleeve for the slide rather than pivoting on the slop in the slide hole and the nut on the other side.

Is that the left or right hand version?

Depends on whether it’s more important to be able to read “STILLSON” or “WALWORTH MADE IN USA”. The “10" to indicate that it’s a #10/nominal 10" wrench is on both sides and the patent stamp is too small to read in normal use anyway.

It would be fun to gently sand blast that tool and see how it looks. Unless it’s a candidate for Antiques Road Show and doing so would reduce its considerable value.

I asked a butter bar lieutenant that in the Army one day as he inventoried my tool box for the umpty-seventh time and he totally took the bait. I felt bad for him though, and spared him the brunt of the humiliation that would typically follow.

Oh the guilt when they actually believe you!

You could have followed that up by asking for a bucket of prop wash.

Or a sky hook or a can of compression or some shore line. Muffler bearings...
